Electronics on canvas. There are very few areas in the modern world that have not been touched by technology. At best, art has seen an evolutionary progress with many artists still choosing to work with traditional materials in time trusted ways, even preferring oils and turpentine to modern acrylics. In the end, it is the artist that creates the art, not the medium but the creative mind is constantly searching for new means of expression.

With so much technology around us, it is difficult to imagine how it could not influence contemporary art yet artists tend not to be technically minded or electronics engineers visually acute.

Joe Gillespie was trained primarily in art but was intrigued by the magic of electronic circuitry from an early age and with the production of electronic music in particular. Painting with coloured light or evoking images in the mind's eye using sound is fairly commonplace in the theatre and cinema but can also extend and augment the visual artist's palette in new and fascinating ways.

Only a few still images of Joe's electronic art are shown in this portfolio. Although they have a precious, jewel-like quality, the actual pieces are not just visual. They have to be experienced at first hand. This electronic art reaches for new dimensions.
